5 Easy Hacks for Busting Through Writer's Block

Writer's block is a frustrating obstacle for anyone who writes. Whether you're crafting a brief article or developing a full manuscript, it can feel like your ideas have vanished, leaving you with a hauntingly blank page.

However, you can take charge of your creative process with some easy and practical strategies. Here are five great starting points to help you unleash your creativity and get back to writing.

1. Switch Up Your Environment

Sometimes, the best way to overcome writer's block is to change your surroundings. If you typically write at home, explore different places where you can create. A change of scenery in and of itself can ignite ideas in unexpected forms. Research shows that a change in environment can boost creativity by as much as 60%.

Consider visiting a coffee shop, a library, or even a nearby park. The new sights, sounds, and smells can ignite your imagination and inspire fresh ideas. This small shift might just provide the spark you need to get started or regain forward momentum.

2. Embrace the Freewrite

Freewriting is a simple yet highly effective way to unlock your thoughts without worrying about errors. Simply set a timer for 10-15 minutes and write whatever comes to mind. Do this without stopping to edit. What the words sound like is a Future You issue you don't need in the moment!

Freewriting encourages you to bypass self-doubt and recognize hidden nuggets of potential. That's because a freewrite promotes "stream of consciousness", or the flow of thoughts into words. For instance, a writer may tackle a major project by freewriting about unrelated topics each day for a week, discovering valuable insights that shape their narrative.

Allowing the chaos to flow can lead to unexpected gems that could be the foundation for your next big project or character. Try it out and let me know in the comments how it works for you!

3. Set Offensive and Defensive Goals

When facing writer's block, setting effective goals can help focus your efforts. To do this, define or work out:

  • overarching or specific offensive goals (what you aim to accomplish)

  • immediate defensive goals (what distractions you want to minimize).

You might set an offensive goal to write 1,000 words by the end of the day while identifying social media notifications as a common distraction. You can combat this by setting your phone to "Do Not Disturb" during your writing sessions, something I highly recommend doing to maintain peace and creative flow.

Research shows that developing clear goals can improve productivity by as much as 25%, helping you remain committed and focused. Take advantage!

4. Use the Power of Music and Soundscapes

I have a whole lesson on this in my creativity coaching programs. The right music can significantly enhance your creative experience. Certain sounds, genres, and playlists can help you concentrate, inspire your writing, and really get into a flow. Writing with headphones on takes this a step further by helping to mute the world's buzzy background noise.

Creating a dedicated playlist for your writing sessions can have a profound effect. For instance, you could include instrumental tracks or soothing nature sounds.

5. Engage in a Creative Hobby

Taking a break from writing and immersing yourself in another creative activity can recharge your mind. Sometimes, distance provides clarity! Engage in low-stress, high-impact hobbies like painting, doodling, cooking, gardening, sewing, crocheting, or even sessions of deep humming to stimulate your imagination.

These activities can help you reconnect with your inner creator and often lead to new ideas for your writing. Stepping back can (and frequently does) help us return with a fresh perspective. For example, one author I work with took up pottery and discovered new themes for their story, enriching the depth of their characters and the world in which they exist.

Your Path Forward

Writer's block is a common struggle for many, but it doesn’t need to stop you from progressing in your writing journey. By trying out these practical tricks, you can find new energy in your work and ideas.

Creativity is unique to each person; we all have our own inner creator, voice, style, and soul. So if some of these hacks aren't your cup of tea, experiment to find the methods that do resonate with you. Inspiration often strikes when you least expect it, so note those moments and replicate them in times of need.

Otherwise, simply take a leap, embrace change, and find yourself crafting your best stories in no time.
